The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke is not only remembered as the inspired author of the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, but also as the first Christian iconographer. Tradition tells us that St. Luke painted the very first icons of the Mother of God: the Eleusa (“Merciful One”), the Jerusalem icon, and the Hodigitria (“She Who Shows the Way”). Through his hand, the Church also received some of the earliest depictions of the holy apostles Peter and Paul.
