Icon of St. John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, and the Holy Great Martyr Catherine of Alexandria

This Orthodox icon depicts St. John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, and the Holy Great Martyr Catherine of Alexandria—two saints known for their unwavering faith, compassion, and wisdom.
 • St. John the Merciful (6th–7th century) was renowned for his boundless charity and dedication to helping the poor. As Patriarch of Alexandria, he personally cared for the sick, redeemed captives, and ensured that no one in his flock was left without aid. His humility, generosity, and deep spiritual wisdom made him one of the most beloved hierarchs of the Church.
 • St. Catherine of Alexandria (3rd–4th century) was a noble and highly educated Christian who bravely defended her faith before the Roman Emperor Maxentius. She defeated pagan philosophers in debate, endured severe tortures, and ultimately received a martyr’s crown for her unwavering devotion to Christ.

This icon serves as a reminder of the virtues of mercy, wisdom, and steadfast faith, making it a perfect addition to any home or church.

What They Pray For:
 • To St. John the Merciful: For help in poverty, charity, healing, and guidance in acts of mercy.
 • To St. Catherine of Alexandria: For wisdom, success in studies, protection from false teachings, and strength in faith.

Life of St. Catherine of Alexandria:

St. Catherine was born into a noble pagan family in Alexandria, Egypt. Exceptionally intelligent, she received a comprehensive education in philosophy, rhetoric, medicine, and theology. Upon learning about Christianity, she converted and dedicated her life to Christ.

During the reign of Emperor Maxentius (early 4th century), Catherine boldly defended the Christian faith before the emperor and his court. She debated with fifty of the most learned pagan philosophers, and through her wisdom and divine inspiration, convinced many of them to embrace Christianity. Enraged, the emperor subjected her to brutal tortures, including the infamous spiked breaking wheel, which miraculously shattered at her touch. Finally, she was beheaded, and according to tradition, angels carried her body to Mount Sinai, where later the famous St. Catherine’s Monastery was built.

St. Catherine remains one of the most revered female saints in Christianity, venerated as the patroness of students, scholars, and those seeking wisdom and guidance.
