Icon of the Holy Great Martyr Dmitry (Demetrius) of Thessaloniki
Demetrius hailed from a noble family in the Roman province of Macedonia. Leveraging his noble heritage, talent, and virtue, he ascended to a prominent military role under Galerius Maximian, Caesar of the Eastern Roman Empire during Diocletian’s rule. Despite serving in a predominantly pagan empire, he remained steadfast in his Christian faith, inspiring many believers to withstand persecution and leading numerous pagans to Christianity.
Since the 7th century, fragrant and miraculous myrrh has been reported flowing from his shrine. The 14th-century Chrysologist described this myrrh as a substance unlike any known material—thicker than water and surpassing all natural and artificial incense—earning Demetrius the title "Myrrh-streaming."
