The Saint Sophia of Slutsk – Holy Righteous Princess icon honors the life and legacy of Princess Sophia of Slutsk (1585–1612), a devoted defender of the Orthodox faith. Princess Sophia played a pivotal role in protecting the Orthodox Church during a period of religious turmoil in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1596, when the Union with Rome was proclaimed, she actively defended her people and their holy sites. Under her leadership, the residents of Slutsk united under the Transfiguration Brotherhood to preserve Orthodox traditions. Sophia even persuaded her Calvinist husband to secure a royal decree guaranteeing the freedom of her subjects to practice their faith without coercion or forced conversion. Her tireless devotion preserved Slutsk as the only city in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to remain independent of Rome.
