Wooden Icon of Saint Theodore Tyrone Holy Great Martyr
The Holy Martyr Theodore Tiron was born in Euchaita (now the village of Beyuzu, Turkey), and was a soldier of the Marmarite regiment in the city of Amasia in the Pontic region (the northeastern region of Asia Minor, stretching along the shores of the Pontus Euxine, i.e. the Black Sea). His nickname Tiron comes from the Latin tiro, which means "new recruit".
During the campaign carried out by order of Emperor Galerius (305-311) to force Christians to sacrifice to pagan gods, Theodore, along with other believers, was forced to renounce Christ and sacrifice to idols, but the soldier firmly confessed his faith in Christ the Savior for all to hear. Theodore's military commander, Vrink, gave him several days to think it over, during which the saint prayed fervently.
After this, Theodore was accused of setting fire to the pagan temple of Cybele and brought to trial before the mayor Publius. Theodore again confessed himself a Christian, after which he was imprisoned and condemned to death by starvation. There, Jesus Christ appeared to him, and the Lord consoled and strengthened him.
Having found Theodore alive some time later, the mayor again offered him to make a sacrifice. After Theodore refused, they tortured him - his body was scraped with iron teeth, but the saint continued to confess Christ, for which he was condemned to be burned. Martyr Theodore, without trembling, went up to the fire and with prayer and praise gave up his holy soul to God. This happened in 305 or 306.
Theodore's remains, according to tradition, undamaged by fire, were asked for by the Christian Eusebia and buried in her house in the city of Euchaita, not far from Amasia. Later, the relics were transferred to Constantinople, to a church consecrated in his name. His head is in Italy, in the city of Gaeta.
