Saints Maximus the Venerable and Maximus the Blessed. Wooden orthodox icon.

Icon of Saints Maximus the Reverend and Maximus the Blessed in front of the icon "Coronation of the Mother of God"

A rare image of two saints.

Blessed Maximus lived in difficult times for the Russian people. Tatar raids, droughts, and epidemics ruined and destroyed people. The saint said to the disadvantaged: "They will beat you for a reason, confess and bow low; do not cry when beaten, cry when unbeaten; for patience God will give salvation." But the saint spoke not only words of consolation, the powers that be feared his angry denunciations. The blessed one said to the noble and the rich: "The altar is home, but the conscience is corrupt; everyone crosses himself, but not everyone prays; God will find every untruth. Neither He will deceive you, nor you Him."

Blessed Maximus died on November 11, 1434 and was buried at the Church of the Holy Princes Boris and Gleb. Miraculous healings began to occur at the relics of the holy saint of God. In 1547, the district charter of Metropolitan Macarius prescribed: "To sing and celebrate in Moscow the new miracle worker Maximus, the fool for Christ's sake." On August 13 of that same year, the incorrupt relics of blessed Maximus were found.

Maximus the Reverend - was born in 580 into a noble Constantinople family. Possessing an outstanding mind and rare abilities for high philosophical reflection, he received an excellent education and chose a career as a politician. In 610, when Emperor Heraclius ascended the throne, he appreciated the significance of Maximus and his Christian virtues and made him his first secretary.
However, fame, power and wealth could not quench in Maximus the desire that he cherished in his heart from his youth - to lead a life corresponding to true philosophy. Three years later he left his position and the empty honors of this world and became a monk in the monastery of the Mother of God in Chrysopolis near Constantinople.
