Icon of Holy Apostle Stephen, First Martyr and Archdeacon

👑 The First to Die for Christ – Witness of Fearless Faith

A Magnificent 18th Century Icon with 16 Scenes from the Saint's Life

This extraordinary icon from approximately 1800, now preserved in a private collection, presents a comprehensive visual narrative of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr — the first Christian martyr, whose courageous witness and forgiveness of his killers set the pattern for all who would follow Christ unto death.

🎨 Iconographic Composition

This richly detailed icon follows the traditional Russian style of hagiographic icons with life scenes. The composition includes:

Upper tier: The Mother of God, Christ the Savior, and John the Forerunner (the Baptist)

Four corners: The Four Evangelists — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

Side borders feature six great Moscow hierarchs:

  • Metropolitan Peter and Metropolitan Alexis
  • Metropolitan Jonah and Metropolitan Philip
  • Blessed Basil and Blessed Maximus

Lower tier: The Three Holy Hierarchs — Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom

Central image: Saint Stephen the Archdeacon, surrounded by 16 detailed scenes depicting his martyrdom and ministry

This elaborate iconographic program places Stephen's witness within the whole communion of saints — surrounded by the Theotokos who bore Christ, the Forerunner who announced Him, the Evangelists who proclaimed Him, the hierarchs who defended the faith, and the great teachers who expounded it.

✨ The Life of Saint Stephen

The First Deacon

Saint Stephen came from Hellenistic Jews — those living outside the Holy Land who were influenced by Greek culture within the Roman Empire. After Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, the Church began growing rapidly. The Apostles found they needed assistance caring for widows, orphans, and the poor among the baptized.

The Christian community chose seven worthy men to serve in this ministry. The Apostles ordained them as deacons (meaning "servants" or "helpers"), making them their closest assistants. Among these seven, young Stephen stood out for his strong faith and gift of eloquent preaching. He became known as the Archdeacon — the first and foremost deacon.

Soon the deacons expanded their ministry beyond care for the poor to include active participation in prayers and divine services — a role deacons maintain in the Church to this day.

Preacher and Wonder-Worker

Stephen preached the Word of God in Jerusalem, confirming the truth of his words with signs and miracles. His success was tremendous, and this aroused the hatred of the Pharisees — zealous defenders of Mosaic Law who saw Christianity as a threat.

They seized Stephen and dragged him before the Sanhedrin — the highest Jewish court. There, false witnesses testified that he blasphemed God and Moses in his preaching.

His Prophetic Speech

In his defense, Saint Stephen delivered a magnificent sermon (recorded in Acts 6-8 by the Evangelist Luke), recounting the entire history of the Jewish people. Through vivid examples, he demonstrated how the Jews had always resisted God and killed the prophets He sent — and now had betrayed and murdered the Righteous One, Jesus Christ Himself.

As Stephen spoke, the members of the Sanhedrin burned with increasing rage.

The Vision of Heaven

At that moment, heaven opened above Stephen, and he cried out: "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" (Acts 7:56)

Hearing this, the Sanhedrin erupted in fury. Covering their ears (unable to bear his words), they rushed upon Stephen and dragged him outside the city walls.

The First Christian Martyrdom

There, according to Jewish law, the witnesses who had first accused him became his executioners. They began stoning him to death.

Present at this execution was a young man named Saul, who had been given custody of the garments of those throwing stones. He approved of Stephen's murder.

As the stones rained down upon him, Stephen displayed the spirit of Christ crucified. He prayed two prayers:

  1. "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!" — entrusting his soul to Christ
  2. "Lord, do not hold this sin against them!" — forgiving his murderers, just as Jesus had forgiven those who crucified Him

With these words, in the year 34 AD, Saint Stephen became the first martyr for Christ — the Protomartyr whose blood would water the seed of the Church.

🌱 The Blood of Martyrs: Seed of the Church

Stephen's martyrdom was not in vain:

Persecution spread the Gospel — Following his death, persecution broke out in Jerusalem, forcing Christians to flee throughout the Holy Land and neighboring countries. This scattering actually spread the Christian faith throughout the Roman Empire.

His death converted Paul — The blood of Stephen proved redemptive in a profound way. Saul, who approved his murder, was soon converted by a vision of the risen Christ on the road to Damascus. He was baptized, took the name Paul, and became the greatest missionary in Christian history — the Apostle to the Gentiles.

Years later, when Paul visited Jerusalem and was himself seized by a mob seeking to stone him, he remembered Stephen's innocent death and his own complicity in it (Acts 22:20). The witness of the first martyr had transformed the chief persecutor into the chief apostle.

🙏 Spiritual Significance for Believers Today

How Saint Stephen the Protomartyr Helps the Faithful:

Courage to witness Christ in hostile environments — Stephen boldly proclaimed the Gospel even before the highest Jewish court. He inspires Christians facing opposition, mockery, or persecution in secular workplaces, universities, and public squares.

Strength for deacons and servants — As the first deacon, Stephen is the heavenly patron of all who serve in the diaconate and of all who minister to the poor, sick, and suffering in Christ's name.

Grace to forgive persecutors — His prayer "Lord, do not hold this sin against them" echoes Christ's own words on the Cross. He helps us forgive those who wrong us, slander us, or seek our harm.

Protection of preachers and evangelists — Stephen's gift of preaching accompanied by signs and wonders makes him a powerful intercessor for those who proclaim the Gospel.

Help for those facing false accusations — Betrayed by false witnesses, Stephen intercedes for the falsely accused, the slandered, and victims of legal injustice.

Vision of heavenly realities — His glimpse of heaven opened reminds us that eternal glory awaits those who remain faithful. He helps us see beyond present sufferings to future glory.

Conversion of enemies — His martyrdom led to Paul's conversion. He prays for the conversion of those who oppose Christianity and persecute the Church.

First among martyrs — As Protomartyr, Stephen holds special honor among all who have died for Christ. He is invoked by those facing martyrdom and by those who venerate the martyrs.

💫 A Model for Christian Witness

Saint Stephen's life and death established the template for Christian martyrdom:

  • Fearless proclamation of truth regardless of consequences
  • Miracles and signs accompanying authentic Gospel witness
  • Forgiveness of enemies even unto death
  • Vision of Christ sustaining the martyr through suffering
  • Peaceful acceptance of a violent death
  • Fruit of conversion springing from martyrs' blood

The Church honors him as Archdeacon (chief deacon) and Protomartyr (first martyr) — the model deacon and the pattern martyr for all ages.

Intercede before the throne of God for all who proclaim the Gospel, for all who minister to those in need, and for all who suffer persecution for righteousness' sake.
