Saint Simeon Righteous of Verkhoturye (Merkushino), with Scenes from His Life.

This beautiful Orthodox icon depicts Saint Simeon of Verkhoturye, one of the most beloved wonderworkers of Siberia, surrounded by detailed scenes from his holy life. Born in the early 17th century into a noble and devout Russian family, Saint Simeon renounced earthly honor and wealth, following God’s call to a life of humility and hidden righteousness. Leaving his homeland, he traveled beyond the Ural Mountains and settled in Siberia, living as a simple wanderer and concealing his noble birth.

Saint Simeon frequently visited the village of Merkushino near Verkhoturye, praying in its small wooden church and preaching the Gospel of the Holy Trinity to the local people. With gentleness and purity of heart, he drew even the indigenous Vogul tribes toward virtue and the Christian faith. Deep in the Siberian wilderness, he devoted himself to contemplation, seeing in every creature the wisdom of the Creator.

A humble worker, Saint Simeon supported himself by sewing fur coats, never accepting payment. Out of modesty, he intentionally left his work unfinished to avoid praise, enduring insults and even beatings with patience and prayer for his offenders. His life became a living image of Christian meekness and non-possessiveness.

He prayed fervently for the strengthening of newly baptized Siberian Christians, sometimes praying while kneeling on a stone in the dense forest. Even in fishing he practiced strict moderation, taking only what was necessary for daily sustenance.

Saint Simeon reposed peacefully in 1642 after a life of prayer, fasting, and spiritual struggle. He was buried at the church of Archangel Michael in Merkushino. Fifty years later, in 1692, his incorrupt relics were miraculously discovered, shining with divine grace. Numerous healings followed—paralytics rose, the blind received sight, and the suffering found consolation.

The Holy Synod officially recognized Saint Simeon as a new wonderworker of Siberia, comparing him to Saint Alexis of Moscow and Saint Sergius of Radonezh for his purity, humility, and miracle-working gifts.

To this day, the faithful turn to Saint Simeon of Verkhoturye for help in illness—especially paralysis and eye diseases—as well as for deliverance during travels, spiritual guidance, protection from evil spirits, and comfort in moments of sorrow. His intercession remains a source of strength and hope for Orthodox Christians around the world.

This icon with life scenes beautifully reflects the saint’s spiritual path—a journey of humility, purity, and divine grace.
