Saint Nina, Equal-to-the-Apostles and Enlightener of Georgia. Wooden orthodox icon.
Original icon from 1908, frame by Faberge workshop
Saint Nina was the niece of the Jerusalem Patriarch Juvenaly. From her youth she loved God with all her heart and deeply regretted people who did not believe in Him. After her father Zabulon went into the hermitage and her mother became a deaconess, Saint Nina was given to a pious old woman to be raised. This old woman's frequent stories about Iberia (present-day Georgia), then still a pagan country, aroused in Nina a strong desire to visit this country and enlighten its inhabitants with the light of the Gospel.
This desire was further strengthened when she once saw in a vision the Mother of God handing her a cross made of grape vines. And her wish came true when she had to flee to Iberia, escaping from the persecution initiated by Emperor Diocletian (284-305).
In Iberia, Saint Nina settled with one woman in the royal vineyards and very soon became famous in the surrounding area, because she provided help to many suffering people. Having learned about the power of her prayers, the sick began to come to her in large numbers. Calling on the name of Christ, Saint Nina healed them and told them about God, who created heaven and earth, and about Christ the Savior.
The preaching about Christ, the miracles that Saint Nina performed, and her virtuous life had a beneficial effect on the inhabitants of Iberia, and many of them believed in the true God and accepted Baptism. She converted to Christ in Georgia even King Marian (Meroy), who had previously been a pagan. Then a bishop and priests were summoned from Constantinople and the first church in Iberia was built in the name of the holy apostles. Gradually, almost all of Iberia accepted Christianity.
Saint Nina, who did not like honors and glory, retired to a mountain where she thanked the Lord in solitude for converting idolaters to Christianity. A few years later, she left her solitude and went to Kakheti, where she converted Queen Sophia to Christianity. After thirty-five years of exploits, Saint Nina died peacefully on January 14, 335. At the site of her death, King Marian erected a church in the name of the Great Martyr George, a distant relative of Saint Nina.
The discovery of Christ's tunic is associated with the memory of Saint Nina. During the crucifixion of the Savior, this tunic was given by lot to a Roman soldier and after various events ended up in Georgia.
