Saint Anthusa of Mantinea or Venerable Abbess Anfisa. Wooden orthodox icon.
Saint Anthusa lived in Mantinea Paphlagonia in Asia Minor in the 8th century. Having left the world early, Saint Anthusa lived in the mountains in complete solitude. Having taken monastic vows from Hieromonk Sisinius, she became abbess in a monastery where 90 sisters had gathered. Saint Anthusa suffered during the reign of Emperor Constantine Copronymus, who forced the saint to renounce the veneration of holy icons.
For failing to comply with the emperor's command, Saint Anthusa was subjected to torture. The emperor's wife was present at the torture, to whom the saint had predicted the birth of a boy and a girl. When the martyr's prophecy was fulfilled, she was released to her monastery, where she died in extreme old age. The girl born to the emperor's wife was named Anthusa. Having lived a God-pleasing life, she was accepted by the Lord into the ranks of saints.
