Icon of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Contemplate the most sacred and joyful moment in all of human history — the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Blessed Virgin Mary. This holy icon depicts the divine encounter in Nazareth when the Archangel Gabriel descended from Heaven to bring humanity's most glorious news: that the eternal Son of God would take flesh in the womb of a young virgin, and that the long-awaited salvation of the world was at hand. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, because it announces the Incarnation of Christ, the Annunciation is counted as one of the eight great feasts of the Lord — the highest rank of celebration in the liturgical year.

The Sacred Event: What Is the Annunciation?

The Feast of the Annunciation commemorates the announcement of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would miraculously conceive and give birth to a son, becoming the Mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, marking His Incarnation.

The biblical story of the Annunciation is found in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke (1:26–39). The Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, who was living in Nazareth, and said to her: "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you." Mary was perplexed and wondered what kind of greeting this was. The angel told her not to be afraid, for she had found favor with God. He said: "You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High."

The angel then told Mary that her cousin Elizabeth had conceived a son in her old age, and affirmed that with God nothing is impossible. In faith and obedience to the will of God, Mary replied: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be according to your word." With these words — her humble and courageous fiat — the eternal Word became flesh, and the salvation of humanity began.

Mary's Free and Courageous "Yes"

On the Feast of the Annunciation, Orthodox Christians commemorate both the divine initiative of God, whereby He took on flesh from the Virgin for our salvation, and the human response, whereby Mary freely accepted the vocation offered to her. He elected to become man, and He desired to do this with the willing agreement of her whom He chose as His Mother. Mary could have refused, for she was not a passive instrument, but an active participant with a free and positive part to play in God's plan for our salvation.

At the Annunciation, Mary was a young teenager, a virgin. Instead of saying "no" to the Lord because of the enormity of the request, she put total trust in the Lord. Her fiat — "let it be done to me according to your word" — remains for all Christians the eternal model of faith, humility, and surrender to God's will.

The Icon: What Does It Depict?

The icon of the Annunciation presents the joy of the announcement of the coming of Christ. It is an icon of bright colors, depicting the Archangel Gabriel, who has descended from heaven, and the Virgin Mary, who has been chosen to be the Mother of God. The Archangel is shown with his feet spread apart as if running to share the good news with Mary. In his left hand is a staff, the symbol of a messenger. His right hand is extended toward Mary as he delivers the message and announces the blessing bestowed upon her by God. A ray of divine light from above — representing the Holy Spirit — descends toward Mary, as Heaven and earth meet in this singular, unrepeatable moment.

What Do Christians Pray for Through the Icon of the Annunciation?

The icon of the Annunciation is a beloved focus of prayer for the whole range of human needs and longings. Believers turn to Our Lady of the Annunciation for:

  • 👶 Expectant mothers and pregnancy — Mary herself was with child; she is the supreme intercessor for mothers awaiting birth, and for the protection of life from conception
  • 🌱 Fertility and the blessing of children — farmers in central Europe traditionally prayed before Annunciation icons for abundant harvests; today believers pray for the gift of new life
  • 🙏 Courage to say "yes" to God's will — for all who face a difficult calling, a major decision, or a seemingly impossible task
  • 💔 Comfort in fear and uncertainty — Gabriel's first words were "Do not be afraid"; Mary intercedes for all who are overwhelmed by life's challenges
  • ✝️ Deeper faith in the Incarnation — for a renewed understanding that God truly became man, and dwells among us
  • 🕊️ Purity of heart and humility — Mary's "handmaid of the Lord" is the model for all who seek to surrender their will to God
  • 🌍 Peace for nations and peoples — as the moment the Prince of Peace entered the world, this icon is prayed before for reconciliation and harmony
  • 📿 The Rosary — the First Joyful Mystery — the Annunciation holds its position as the first Joyful Mystery of the Dominican Rosary, making this icon a natural companion to this most beloved of Marian prayers
