Holy Great Martyr Margaret of Antioch Icon with Life Scenes (Saint Marina)
The Orthodox icon of Holy Great Martyr Marina of Antioch (also known as Saint Margaret of Antioch) reveals the radiant strength of faith, purity, and courage of a young Christian martyr who conquered both earthly torment and demonic power through Christ. Born in Antioch of Asia Minor to a pagan priest, Saint Marina was raised in the Christian faith and chose unwavering devotion to Christ despite rejection by her own father.
During the fierce persecutions under Emperor Diocletian, Saint Marina of Antioch was arrested at only fifteen years of age. Refusing to renounce Christ or accept marriage to the pagan governor Olymbrios, she endured brutal tortures with extraordinary spiritual fortitude. Through prayer, she was miraculously healed in prison and openly glorified the Holy Trinity. Her martyrdom became a powerful testimony that inspired thousands to believe in Christ, even at the cost of their own lives.
A distinctive and deeply symbolic element of Saint Marina’s life is her victory over the devil while imprisoned. When a demonic serpent appeared, the saint overcame it through the sign of the Cross and the power of prayer, physically subduing the enemy of salvation. For this reason, Saint Marina (Margaret) of Antioch is especially venerated as a helper against demonic temptations, spiritual attacks, fear, and inner struggles. Monastics and lay believers alike turn to her for strength, purity, and steadfast faith.
The relics of the Great Martyr Marina were preserved in Antioch until the 10th century and later transferred to Italy, while her holy hand is kept on Mount Athos at Vatopedi Monastery. This icon with scenes from her life serves as a vivid spiritual reminder that Christ’s power is made perfect in humility, courage, and unwavering trust in God.
The Holy Great Martyr Marina was born in Asia Minor, in the city of Antioch, into the family of a pagan priest. In infancy she lost her mother, and her father gave her into the care of a wet nurse, who raised Marina in the Orthodox faith. Upon learning that his daughter had become a Christian, the father indignantly disowned her. During the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian (284-305), Saint Marina was captured at the age of fifteen and thrown into prison. With firm trust in the will of God and His help, the young prisoner prepared for her upcoming exploit. The governor Olymbrios, enchanted by the girl’s beauty, tried to persuade her to renounce the Christian faith and become his wife. But the saint, without hesitation, rejected the flattering offers. Then the enraged ruler subjected the holy martyr to torture. Cruelly beaten, the saint was nailed to a board and her body was torn with tridents. The ruler himself, unable to bear the horror of this torture, covered his face with his hands. But the holy martyr remained steadfast. Thrown into prison for the night, she was granted a visitation from Heaven and was healed of her wounds. Tied to a tree, the martyr was scorched with fire. Barely alive, the saint prayed: "Lord, You have granted me to go through fire for Your Name, grant me to go through the water of holy Baptism." Hearing the word "water," the ruler ordered the saint to be drowned in a huge barrel. The martyr asked the Lord that this execution would become holy Baptism for her. When she was immersed in the water, a light suddenly shone and a snow-white dove descended from Heaven, carrying a golden crown in its beak. The bonds placed on Saint Marina came undone by themselves. The martyr stood in the baptismal font glorifying the Holy Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Saint Marina emerged from the baptismal font completely healthy, without a single trace of burns. The people, struck by the miracle, began to glorify the True God, and many believed. This enraged the ruler, and he ordered the destruction of all who confessed the Name of Christ. Then 15,000 Christians perished, and the holy martyr Marina was beheaded.
The relics of the great martyr Marina were in the monastery in Antioch until 908 and from there they were transferred to Italy. Her honest hand was transferred to Athos, to the Vatopedi Monastery.
The story of the “physical” torture of the unclean spirit by the righteous man is presented in the life of St. Martyr Marina (Margarita) of Antioch. Imprisoned in a dungeon, the stilted Marina asked the Lord to show her her enemy, the devil, and a serpent (later specified: "a serpent-like demon") appeared before her, whistling, spewing flame and stench, entwined with small snakes. The saint overcame her fear and prayed to God again. After this, the monster swallowed the saint, but she made the sign of the cross, the serpent's belly burst, and he fell dead. From another corner, a demon immediately appeared and, taking the martyr by the hand, tried to turn her away from prayer. The saint grabbed the demon "by the hair and by the mustache"; while the demon, tormented by the power of Christ, screamed in pain, the prisoner tore out half his beard and his right eye. Then Marina took a copper hammer and hit the demon in the face with it - the evil one fell to the ground, and the maiden stepped on him with her foot and hit him on the head and shoulders with the hammer. After this, the saint sent Beelzebub to hell, and before her death she prayed to the Lord that whoever would remember her life and rewrite her life would be freed from all sins.
Monastics especially pray to Saint Marina, so that through the prayers of the saint they can overcome the devil's temptations.
