The Icon of the “All-Seeing Eye of God” is a remarkable example of Russian symbolic iconography of the mid-19th century, preserved today in the collection of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Created by masters of the Ural school, this icon reflects the depth of Orthodox theology expressed through allegory and cosmic symbolism.
The composition unfolds in concentric circles, representing the divine order of the universe under God’s providence. At the center is Christ Emmanuel, blessing with both hands, surrounded by radiant light and the mysterious four-eyed face — a symbol of God’s omniscience and the ever-watchful Eye of the Lord.
The outer circles are adorned with golden six-winged seraphim, rays, and stars, symbolizing the angelic hosts. At the top, God the Father (Sabaoth) blesses the world, while below, the Mother of God is depicted in the Oranta pose, interceding for humankind. The corners of the composition show the apocalyptic symbols of the four Evangelists — the ox, the eagle, the lion, and the angel — each holding golden books of the Gospel.
This icon is grounded in the words of the Psalms: “Behold, the Eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy” (Psalm 32:18).
