Saint Arsenius the Abbot of Konevets (Konevsky) or Venerable Arsenius of Konevets. Wooden orthodox icon.
Saint Arseny Konevsky was born in Novgorod the Great. He was a craftsman, a coppersmith. In 1373 he entered the Novgorod Lisitsky Monastery (Russia), where he took monastic vows with the name Arseny.
The young monk lived in the monastery for eleven years, undergoing various obediences. Striving for even higher spiritual feats, Saint Arseny went to Mount Athos. He spent three years in one of the Athonite monasteries, making copper utensils for the Athonite monks; Saint Arseny devoted much time to prayer.
When the time came to return to Rus', Abbot John blessed him with an icon of the Holy Mother of God, which later received the name Konevskaya, and gave the ascetic a communal charter. Saint Arseny underwent further feats on Valaam. The monk often cried out to the Lord, prayerfully asking for a place to establish a new monastery. And once, when he was at sea, a storm brought him to the island of Konevets, which is on Lake Ladoga. Here, by God's providence, the Venerable Arseny erected a cross and, remaining for his exploits, built a chapel in 1393. After five years of exploits in the skete, the Venerable Arseny transformed it in 1398, with the blessing of the Novgorod Archbishop John (1389-1415), into a communal monastery, where he built a church in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Venerable Arseny is revered as the patron saint of sailors.
