This blessed icon depicts Saint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria — one of the greatest examples of Christian charity and compassion in the history of the Church.

Saint John became renowned for his boundless love for the poor and suffering. Upon ascending to the patriarchal throne, he ordered a census of all those in need in Alexandria — more than seven thousand people were counted. To all of them, the saint provided daily free sustenance.

Twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, he himself would come out to the doors of the patriarchal cathedral and, sitting on the steps, would receive all the destitute: settling disputes, helping the wronged, and distributing alms. Three times a week he visited hospitals, comforting the afflicted. When the Persians plundered Jerusalem and captured many prisoners, the holy patriarch John allocated a large portion of the church treasury for their ransom.

The saint never refused anyone who asked and was known for his gentle and loving treatment of people, becoming a living embodiment of Christ's words: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40).
