Saint Liutwin of Trier Icon — Bishop and Founder of Mettlach Abbey

Saint Liutwin of Trier (c. 660–717), also known as Saint Lutwin of Mettlach, was an early medieval Frankish bishop, monk and founder of Mettlach Abbey in present-day Germany.

Born into a noble family, Liutwin left behind a life of privilege to devote himself to monastic service and the Christian Church. He became one of the important religious figures of the region around Trier and the Saar River during the late seventh and early eighth centuries.

This wooden icon honors a remarkable saint of early Western Christianity, remembered for his humility, pastoral leadership and the monastery he established at Mettlach.

Iconography of Saint Liutwin of Trier

This icon depicts Saint Liutwin of Trier as an early Western Christian bishop, dressed in richly ornamented red and gold episcopal vestments and wearing a jeweled mitre.

In his right hand, he holds a miniature church, symbolizing his foundation of Mettlach Abbey and his contribution to the growth of Christian monastic life in the region. In his left hand, he carries an ornate bishop's crozier, representing his pastoral authority and responsibility for the faithful.

Behind the saint stretches a peaceful landscape of rocky hills, green trees and a river, with monastic buildings recalling the historic setting of Mettlach in the Saar Valley.

The warm ochre-gold background, golden halo and decorative episcopal garments combine traditional iconographic elements with the visual heritage of Western Christianity.

Saint Liutwin belongs to the early Western saints of the undivided Church, making this icon especially meaningful for those devoted to the Christian heritage shared by Eastern and Western traditions.

The Life of Saint Liutwin of Trier

Saint Liutwin was born around AD 660, probably into a noble Frankish family connected with the region of Trier.

According to traditional accounts, he initially served at the Frankish court and was married before entering religious life.

Around 690, Liutwin founded a monastery on his own property at Mettlach, near the Saar River. The monastery became an important center of Christian prayer, education and religious life.

After the death of his wife, Liutwin entered the monastery as a monk. He later became a priest and bishop, eventually succeeding his uncle, Bishop Basin, as Bishop of Trier.

Some historical traditions also associate him with the episcopal sees of Reims and Laon, although the details of these appointments remain uncertain.

Liutwin died in the early eighth century, traditionally around 717. His memory became closely associated with Mettlach, where his relics were venerated.

The Legend of Saint Liutwin and the Eagle

One of the most distinctive traditions associated with Saint Liutwin tells of a remarkable event during a hunting journey near the Saar River.

According to the legend, Liutwin fell asleep beneath a tree. As the sun moved across the sky, an eagle spread its wings above him, protecting him from the heat.

When he awoke and learned what had happened, Liutwin interpreted the eagle's protection as a sign of divine providence.

The story became associated with his decision to establish a monastery at Mettlach.

The eagle remains a memorable symbol in the traditional story of Saint Liutwin, representing protection, divine guidance and the beginning of his monastic foundation.

Mettlach Abbey and the Christian Heritage of Trier

The monastery founded by Saint Liutwin helped establish Mettlach as an important center of Christian life in the Saar region.

His legacy is also preserved in the historic Old Tower of Mettlach (Alter Turm), a surviving early medieval octagonal building associated with the former abbey and the veneration of the saint.

Saint Liutwin belongs to the Christian history of the first millennium, before the formal separation of the Eastern and Western Churches.

His life reflects the early medieval tradition of bishops who combined pastoral responsibility with the foundation and support of monasteries.

Feast Day and Veneration

Saint Liutwin's feast day is traditionally celebrated on September 29, with a local commemoration in Trier on September 27.

He is especially associated with Mettlach, Trier and the historic Christian heritage of the Saarland region of Germany.

For those devoted to the early saints of Western Europe, Saint Liutwin is a meaningful example of humility, religious dedication and service to the Church.

This rare Christian icon is a meaningful choice for a home prayer corner, a collection of early European saints or as a religious gift for someone with a special devotion to Saint Liutwin, Mettlach or the Christian history of Trier.
