Saint Vincent of Saragossa, Martyr of Valencia, Vincent of Huesca or Vicentius Augustopolitanus. Wooden orthodox icon.

The Holy Martyr Vincent was a disciple from childhood of a wise pastor, the Bishop of the city of Augustopolis (now Saragossa, Spain), blessed Valerius. When he came of age, the virtuous, educated and eloquent Vincent was ordained a deacon by Bishop Valerius. Since the bishop himself was tongue-tied, he blessed his deacon, an excellent orator, to preach the Word of God both in the church and to the people. By order of Diocletian (284-305), the ruler Dacian arrived in Spain, in the city of Valencia, with the authority to seek out and execute Christians. The ruler was informed about the wise bishop and his deacon-preacher.

The chained elder and his disciple were dragged by mounted soldiers from Augustopolis to Valencia and, beaten and exhausted, were thrown into prison, where they were given neither food nor water. The bishop was the first to be interrogated. The elder spoke quietly, tongue-tied, and seemed uncertain.

Then Saint Vincent stepped forward. The saint delivered the most beautiful sermon of his life before the judges and the assembled people, confessing and glorifying God, glorified in the Trinity – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Having sent the bishop back to prison, the persecutor ordered the holy deacon to be tortured.

The martyr underwent many tortures; he was crucified on the cross, beaten, and burned with red-hot rods. When he fell from the cross, he joyfully climbed onto it himself, asking the executioners to nail him again in order to experience the sufferings of the Savior on the cross. After the torture, the martyr was thrown into prison, and the guards heard him singing psalms at night with amazement, and saw an unearthly radiant light in the prison. The next morning, the holy martyr was given over to burning.

This happened in the year 304.
