Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Bishop of Myra in Lycia. The Gate Icon of Saint Nicholas on the Nikolskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin. Wooden orthodox icon.

The 14th-century icon of St. Nicholas above the Nikolskaya Tower gates of the Moscow Kremlin has a history of miraculous survival.

It withstood the 1737 fire and the 1812 explosion of the tower by retreating French troops. Emperor Alexander I later placed a marble plaque below it, praising God’s protection.

During the 1917 Bolshevik siege, the tower was heavily shelled. The icon was riddled with bullets, yet St. Nicholas’ face remained untouched, which believers saw as a miracle. Patriarch Tikhon later sent a photograph of the damaged icon to Admiral Kolchak as a blessing in his fight against the Bolsheviks.

In 1918, the Soviet government ordered the icon concealed with red fabric. On May 1, in Lenin’s presence, the covering inexplicably tore and fell before the crowd, leaving a deep impression on witnesses.

Later, Soviet authorities plastered over the icon, but restorers later found it had been carefully preserved underneath.

St. Nicholas the Wounded became a new image in iconography, symbolizing faith’s endurance against oppression.

Saint Nicholas, pray for us!
