This beautiful icon depicts Saint Paraskeva the Great Martyr, also known as Paraskeva Pyatnitsa (“Friday” in Greek), a beloved Christian saint honored for her steadfast faith and sacrificial love for Christ.
The original 19th-century icon is preserved today in a private collection.
Saint Paraskeva was born into a Christian family and dedicated her entire life to God. During the persecutions of Christians under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, she boldly confessed her faith and refused to renounce Christ. For her unwavering devotion, she was tortured and ultimately beheaded by the governor of Iconium, receiving the crown of martyrdom.
In Christian tradition, Saint Paraskeva is venerated as a protectress of women, as well as a patron saint of home, family life, crafts, needlework, and honest trade. Many believers pray to her for help in daily labors, family well-being, and spiritual strength.
