The iconography dates back to the 16th century. The literary basis of the iconography is the words from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom: “The only begotten Son and Word of God, the Immortal One, who was willing for our salvation to be incarnate from the Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, immutably made man, crucified, O Christ God, trampling down death by death, the One who is the Holy Trinity , glorified to the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us."

On the icon in the center is an image of the Trinity, below is death trampling the bodies of sinners. The icon depicts scenes of the Crucifixion, Lamentation and Descent into Hell of Jesus Christ.

The margins depict four archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.
