Wooden Icon of the Mother of God "Healer" and holy healers

The appearance of one of the oldest icons of the Mother of God "The Healer" occurred during the time of St. Nina, the enlightener of Georgia (IV century). The icon was located in the Tsilkan temple in the area of Kartalinia.

The icon depicts the Mother of God standing at the bedside of a sick cleric. The iconographic plot for the miraculous image was the legend of the miraculous healing described in the work of St. Demetrius of Rostov "The Watered Fleece":

"I happened to read such a thing in Peter Damian's book. A certain cleric of the Nivirna Church was seriously ill with a mortal illness. And it was his custom every hour, when the clock struck, to praise the Most Holy Theotokos with an angelic greeting: "Rejoice, Gracious One!" — attaching a certain prayer to Her and doing it day and night. If he fell asleep once, then with the striking of the clock he woke up and performed the usual prayer. And so much did he honor our Lady as such a prince, how many hours had passed in the days and in the nights.

And when he was lying on the bed of illness and preparing for death, our Most Holy Lady Theotokos suddenly appears to him and, slightly opening Her girlish nipple and squeezing it, sprinkles milk on the mouth of the sick and becomes invisible. From this incident, the patient jumped up, quickly put on his clerical robes and ran to the church. Entering the choir, he stood in his place among the singing clerics, amazed and trembling at the sudden change in him and unexpected recovery — after all, no one expected to see him alive anymore. When they asked about the reason for his health, then he revealed to everyone, praising his Most Merciful Healer, how She sprinkled his mouth — traces of that milk still remained on his lips... Oh, glorious miracle!

After all, the Most Merciful Healer could heal Her slave in some other way, with a word or touch, but she revealed this strange way of healing: those lips were sprinkled with Virgin milk, that every hour the Virgin was praised, here on earth, giving them a bribe. So that everyone, seeing and hearing, would give thanks with one mouth and one heart to the Blessed Virgin Theotokos."
