Icon of the Holy Martyr Mamant of Caesarea (Cappadocia)
For the confession of faith, Emperor Aurelian (270-275) subjected the Mammoth to cruel tortures. They wanted to drown him, but an Angel saved the Mammoth and commanded him to live on a high mountain in the desert, not far from Caesarea.
The saint built a small church there, animals came to him from the desert and listened to the reading of the Holy Gospel. He himself fed on the milk of wild goats and fallow deer. His fame spread throughout Caesarea. He was brought to trial and given to be eaten by animals, but they did not touch the Saint. Then one priest struck him with a trident. Mortally wounded, he retired to a stone cave, where he died.
He was buried by Christians at this place in 275. Later, a temple was built there, where the relics of Saint Mamant are kept.
Saint Mamant is the patron saint of goats, sheep, and cats.
