Wooden Icon of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ

At the top of the icon is the Savior ascending in glory, supported by two angels. Below in the center is the Mother of God with her hands raised in prayer, surrounded by the apostles. On the right is the Apostle Paul, on the left is Peter. The faces of the apostles are turned to Christ. Behind the Mother of God there are two angels.

The Ascension of the Lord takes place on the fortieth day after Easter, so it always falls on Thursday. The event of the Ascension is described in the Gospels of Mark, Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, which say that after His Resurrection, within forty days, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to the apostles more than once, teaching them the basics of building the Church and spreading the true faith. On the fortieth day, when the last such phenomenon took place, the Lord, having given the disciples a promise of the imminent sending down to the world of the Holy Spirit - the third Person of the Holy Trinity - led the disciples from Jerusalem to the Mount of Olives on the road to Bethany and, blessing them, began to ascend to heaven, “and a cloud took Him out of their sight.”
