Warrior saints Alexander or Aleksandr Peresvet and Rodion or Andrey Oslyabya. Wooden orthodox icon

On August 18, 1380, the faithful Prince of Moscow Dmitry asked the Reverend Sergius of Radonezh for a blessing for the Battle of Kulikovo and also asked for two warriors to reinforce him – brothers Alexander-Peresvet and Andrei-Oslyabya. The calling of the monk-fighters had primarily a spiritual significance. Reverend Sergius gave them “instead of perishable weapons, an incorruptible one – the cross of Christ, sewn onto the schema, and ordered them to wear them instead of gilded helmets.” Having handed over the warrior-schemamonks to the prince’s disposal, Reverend Sergius said to them: “Peace be with you, my brothers, fight hard, like good warriors, for the faith of Christ and for all Orthodox Christianity.” On the day of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, before the beginning of the Battle of Kulikovo, Alexander Peresvet accepted the challenge of a hero from Mamai’s army and entered into single combat with him. The warriors struck each other with spears, both fell from their horses and died. The draw showed the spiritual power of the blessing of St. Sergius, inspired the Russian troops and became the key to their historic victory.

The body of St. Alexander-Peresvet was buried near the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary "on Old Simonov". The body of St. Andrei-Oslyabya was also placed here.
