This handcrafted Orthodox icon of Archangel Gabriel — known as the Angel with Golden Hair — is a faithful reproduction of one of the oldest surviving Russian icons. The original icon, dating back to the 12th century, is preserved in the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg and is widely regarded as a treasure of pre-Mongol Russian spirituality and artistry.
Rendered in the Novgorod school of icon painting and deeply rooted in Byzantine tradition, this icon was once part of a Deesis tier — a sacred composition in which saints intercede before Christ on behalf of humankind. Gabriel, as one of the greatest archangels, was the divine messenger who brought both the commandment to Adam and the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary.
His golden hair, a symbol of immortality and divine majesty, gives the icon its name. His expression is serene and powerful — a living image of divine beauty, calm authority, and spiritual grace.
