Icon of the Mother of God “Seeking of the Lost”
The origin of the “Seeking of the Lost” icon of the Theotokos is shrouded in mystery, yet throughout history, several wonderworking copies under this name have been known. Through them, the Mother of God has shown mercy to those who seemed to have already crossed the threshold of despair and ruin.
Before this holy icon, countless souls have prayed: brides seeking a blessed and salvific marriage, those enslaved by drunkenness, families crushed by poverty, the sick weighed down by suffering, and mothers weeping for children who had strayed from the path of salvation. In every case, the Queen of Heaven has extended her compassion, bringing hope, healing, and deliverance.
The faithful cry out before her:
“Seek us who are perishing, O Most Holy Virgin. Punish us not according to our sins, but according to Your love for mankind show mercy. Deliver us from hell, from sickness and from need, and save our souls.” (Troparion, Tone 4)
This icon reminds us that no soul is beyond the reach of the Theotokos’ intercession. Her maternal love embraces even the most lost and suffering, calling them back to life, repentance, and salvation in Christ.
