Saint Hilda of Whitby (614–680), also known as St Hild of Whitby, was one of the most influential women of early English Christianity. An Anglo-Saxon princess who became a nun and abbess, she devoted her life to monastic leadership, Christian education and the spiritual formation of the Church in Northumbria.

She is especially remembered as the founding abbess of Whitby Abbey, the monastery associated with the historic Synod of Whitby in 664.

Around 657, she established the monastery at Whitby, known in her lifetime as Streoneshalh.

This was a double monastery, a religious community of both men and women living in separate houses under the authority of an abbess.

Hilda became renowned for her wisdom, learning and spiritual guidance. Several men educated within her community later became bishops, reflecting the monastery's importance in the development of the early English Church.

Saint Hilda and the Synod of Whitby

In 664, Hilda's monastery hosted the Synod of Whitby, one of the defining events in the history of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England.

The gathering addressed differences in ecclesiastical practice, particularly the calculation of the date of Easter.

King Oswiu of Northumbria ultimately supported the Roman method of calculating Easter.

Although Hilda had been formed within the traditions associated with Iona, she accepted the decision and continued her work as abbess.

The synod remains an important event in the history of the English Church and its relationship with wider Western Christianity.

Saint Hilda and the Poet Cædmon

Saint Hilda is also closely associated with Cædmon, one of the earliest named poets in the English language.

According to the Venerable Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, Cædmon was an ordinary worker at Hilda's monastery who received the gift of composing religious poetry.

Recognizing his ability, Hilda welcomed him into the monastic community and encouraged his religious education.
