Icon of Venerable Saint Genevieve of Paris

She is shown in the traditional iconographic manner — as a consecrated virgin in monastic garments, holding a candle or scroll, her face reflecting the quiet radiance of a soul entirely given to God.
✝️ Life and Holiness of Saint Genevieve
Saint Genevieve is the patron saint of Paris and France. She came into the world around the year 420 in the Roman province of Gaul. Her Christian parents, Severus and Gerontia, owned a modest farm in Nanterre.
Genevieve was twelve years old when the holy bishops Saint Germanus of Auxerre and Saint Lupus of Troyes arrived in Nanterre. Bishop Germanus noticed the young girl in the crowd, called her to him, kissed her forehead, and turned to her parents, promising a blessed life for their daughter. In that brief exchange, Genevieve expressed her dream of dedicating her life to Christ.
At the age of fifteen, Genevieve took monastic vows and dedicated herself to a life of prayer and service. When her parents died, she moved to Paris and continued her works of mercy. Through fasting, vigil, and prayer she progressed in the ascetic life and received from God the gifts of clairvoyance and the working of miracles. Gradually the people of Paris and the surrounding area regarded her as a holy vessel of God.
One of the most celebrated episodes of her life took place in 451 AD, when Attila the Hun turned his vast army toward Paris. Genevieve exhorted the people to fast and pray constantly rather than flee, assuring them that the city would be spared — and the Huns left Paris unharmed. The city was saved, and from that moment on her voice was heeded not only by the people but by kings and rulers.
There is a beloved tradition that on a stormy Saturday night, as Saint Genevieve was leading her nuns to church, the wind extinguished her lantern. She made the Sign of the Cross over it, and the candle burned with a bright flame, lighting their way through the dark and muddy road. This miracle became one of the most cherished images in her iconography.
The anonymous biographer of the Saint relates multitudes of miracles in her Life — she expelled demons, healed paralytics, and gave sight to the blind. Once, a sorrowful mother brought her the dead body of her four-year-old son. The Saint covered him with her cloak and prayed for many hours with tears, until the child was resurrected.
Over time, Genevieve has remained a symbol of holiness lived at the heart of everyday life, capable of uniting contemplation with civic responsibility. She showed how trust in God can become a strength that sustains an entire people.
On 9 March 2017, the name of the Venerable Genevieve was formally added to the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church. Her feast day is celebrated on January 3 / January 16 (New Style).
