Wooden Icon of the Mother of God of Azov (Azovskaya)
The Azovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, a Russian Orthodox icon, commemorates the Russo-Turkish wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. According to legend, the Mother of God appeared during a battle at the besieged Azov fortress, causing the Turkish army to flee in terror. The double-headed eagle, a symbol of the Byzantine Christian Empire, is depicted behind the Mother of God, representing the union of western and eastern Christianity within Orthodox Russia. Featured above are the Apostles Peter and John the Evangelist, while on either side are Saints Anthony and Theodosius of the Kiev Caves. Below the figure of the Mother of God is Saint George slaying a dragon, symbolizing the defeat of the Turkish enemy. The Azov Fortress is depicted at the bottom of the icon.
