His father opposed him. But faith proved stronger than family pressure — and Honoratus not only held firm in his vocation, but inspired his elder brother Venantius to join him on the same path.

The two brothers first opened a hostel in their own home, caring for travelers and pilgrims. Then, guided by their spiritual father, the learned and holy monk Caprasius, they set out toward the East — to Palestine, Syria, and Egypt — to encounter the great monastic tradition at its source. Venantius died on the journey. Honoratus returned to southern Gaul and withdrew to a cave in the Esterel mountains, alone with God.

Around the year 400, he settled on a small island off the coast of Provence — today known as Saint-Honorat. Around him gathered a community of disciples. That barren island became one of the greatest monastic centers of the Christian West, the celebrated Abbey of Lérins, a spiritual powerhouse whose monks would go on to become bishops, theologians, and saints across all of Europe.

In 427, Honoratus was called by the Church to serve as Bishop of Arles — one of the most important sees in the Western Empire. He accepted reluctantly, as true shepherds always do. He governed his flock with the same gentleness and depth he had brought to the desert. In 429, sensing the approach of death, he named as his successor Hilary, a monk whom he himself had formed at Lérins.

Honoratus was buried in the necropolis of Arles known as the Alyscamps, in the Basilica of the Martyr Genesius. In 1391, his relics were transferred to Lérins monastery. During the French Revolution, the silver reliquary was confiscated by the government; the relics themselves were distributed among various churches of the Diocese of Grasse for safekeeping. In the late 20th century, a portion of the relics was returned to Lérins Abbey, where the monastic community continues to this day.

Saint Honoratus is venerated as a saint in both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.
